(I loved Reverb10, where I was sent a writing prompt every day of December. It was a great way to reflect on the year and set some goals. Alas, Reverb11 is not going to happen unless I do it. So, I’ve collected the prompts from last year, exchanged a few of my own, and will select one every day.)
Prompt: Soul Food. What did you eat this year that you will never forget?
I was in upstate New York during this cold and snowy spring, and eating in a room with 60 other professionals and admission staff. I was the only vegan. When you travel like this you never know how things will play out – will I get an edible entrée, or will I have to have a granola bar for dinner? I always have a stash of food in my purse just in case.
But the waitress brought out this plate just for me. And it smelled good. Really good. I tentatively took a bite, and was in love.
I really don’t know what it was. Broccoli, chickpeas, olives, all in a spicy tangy tomato sauce over rice. It was nothing I would have ever imagined putting together. The serving was bigger than my head, so I didn’t finish it, but I ate more that night than any other.
As I go through my cookbooks I’ve kept my eye out for something that would mimic the dish I got on that cold night far from home, but the more time passes the more the dish becomes mythical. It’s likely I’ll never have it again. If I ever do? I’ll make sure to get the recipe!
P.S. Last year I wrote this.
