(I loved Reverb10, where I was sent a writing prompt every day of December. It was a great way to reflect on the year and set some goals. Alas, Reverb11 is not going to happen unless I do it. So, I’ve collected the prompts from last year, exchanged a few of my own, and will select one every day.)
Prompt: Wisdom. What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out?
One of the wisest decisions I made this year was to be spontaneous and go to Portland for a weekend with my girlfriends. When the trip was suggested, I was sure it was a bad idea. All last minute ideas are bad ideas, right? The timing was wrong, the cost was too much, and I had not been in the same room with a few of these women in a long time. I love my girlfriends from college like the sisters I never had, but sometimes that means I want to kill them the way you want to kill your siblings.
But I did it anyway. I bought a ticket. I got on a plane at the worst time of year for me professionally, and I spent a weekend with my best girlfriends. And it was awesome. I am so glad I did it.
I surprised myself with telling that little anxious voice in my head to shut up and instead saying ‘count me in!’ for once. Sometimes wisdom is about just jumping in with both feet and not over thinking things.
PS. Last year I wrote this.
